No, you do not have to rent a tux. You do however, have to wear suit and tie attire. “Black tie” means a tuxedo event. “Formal attire or formal event” means suit and tie. Ladies, a nice dress or fancy pant suit. The reason that the bride and groom put this on the invitation is because many people today are showing up for weddings in casual attire!!! Short sleeve plaid shirts with nice jeans is common. That type of outfit is appropriate for the following day when/if there is a brunch at someone’s home to honor the newly married couple. If male children are invited and they do not own a suit or jacket, a nice long sleeved shirt with a tie is appropriate with nicely pressed trousers. No cargo shorts, please!!!
