I’m turning sixteen in a few months and I’m starting to make plans for my party. Usually, people give speeches at the party recognizing the 16 most important people in their lives. I put a lot of thought into it and realized I can’t really put a number order on my friends and family. I don’t want anyone to feel hurt that they weren’t included or make some friends feel that they are less important to me than others. But will it seem rude and unappreciative to skip that part of the ceremony?

First of all, I am very impressed that you are planning in advance, and thinking of the sensitivity of others. This is my recommendation for your situation: You could address your guests in a “speech-type format” where you thank everyone for attending your party. Be honest, and simply say that you cannot specifically name 16 [...]

It is better to be over dressed than under dressed, and it is always proper to call the host if in doubt. Don’t do it 30 minutes before the party however!
