Yes it is! Seventeen other women and I have published an 18-chapter book, The Power of Civility, just in time to celebrate civility! It is available on my website and through Amazon.com.

You recommended a book for us to give our mom’s on Mother’s Day. Is it entitled Passages or New Passages by Gail Sheehy?
Gail Sheehy wrote Passages in the mid ‘70’s. Twenty years later she “rewrote” it, and titled it New Passages. I highly recommend it for moms, dads, anyone! You read it too! It is a valuable resource about the passages of life. Gail Sheehy writes from many of her own experiences, including being a caregiver for her husband [...]
I attended ALA in Cabo. Thank you for your dedication. You mentioned appropriate thank you notes. Would you kindly give me the information to order them?
There are two fantastic companies that offer a fine product for you: American Stationery (americanstationery.com) and Horchow Collection (horchow.com). At this time, American Stationery is offering 50 personalized note cards and 50 plain envelopes for $39.95 plus S&H. Their phone number is 1-800-822-2577, and the item number is HBH. For men I recommend the Block [...]
Whoops! A faux pas for sure!! Discard gum in the restroom, using a piece of paper towel or tissue. Do not put the discarded gum anywhere else! If you feel that you need to have gum [possibly to keep saliva flowing], I encourage you to use tic-tacs instead.
Unless a person knows that someone checks email on a Blackberry/Iphone, it is inconsiderate. Phone calls are best to clarify any pertinent changes about a meeting.
For relationships, I highly recommend Love and Respect by Dr. Emerson Eggerichs and New Passages by Gail Sheehy. Business etiquette books: Kiss, Bow, or Shake Hands, 2nd edition (how to do business in over 60 countries) by authors Morrison and Conaway. Stocking stuffer little gift: The Little Book of Etiquette by Dorthea Johnson. BOOKS OF [...]
My husband and I disagree about saying a prayer before a meal with our family in a restaurant. He was raised to “never wear your religion on your sleeve,” therefore he thinks it is disrespectful [of others] to say the blessing in public. Is this similar to something like PDA?
When I think of PDA, I think of teenagers (unfortunately, some adults as well) publicly displaying [too much] physical attention. Conversely, prayer is respect for a higher power. In public, it comes under the category of freedom of speech. What is immediately important for you to resolve is the conflict in your family. To help [...]
When I get ready to give a presentation, I get very nervous. Do you have some quick tips?
It is normal and natural to get nervous before presentations, speeches, dinner parties, etc. It is called “creative tension” when you put your butterflies in alignment so they are not running amuck. You need such adrenalin to get excited about your topic, your product or about your party. ENTHUSIASM is the main ingredient, so use [...]
Where did the term “no problem” come from? It irritates me when people in the service industry say it. Was it a “problem” to start with?
It is irritating. It is a bad habit. Most likely it came from a Jamaican-type ditty, “Be happy, no problem.” The simple response when someone says “Thank you” is “You’re welcome”. The classy version, which is part of 5-star hotel/restaurant customer service, is “Thank you” followed by “My pleasure” or “Our pleasure to serve you”.
In a job interview for a large company I was asked if I was on Facebook. I honestly did not know what to say, so I responded with, “I’ve been thinking about it.” When I got back home I changed some things on my Facebook account that I did not want this company to see. My question to you is in regard to fairness of privacy. Isn’t this invasion of privacy?
Facebook is an “open book” when it comes to corporations and your personal life. Yes, your “friends” have to ask for permission to go on to your site. But the HR department checked you out waaaayyyy BEFORE the interview. Clean up your FB account. Otherwise it is called “career suicide.”
